Abstract

This article analyzes the political dimension of the General Conferences of the Latin American and Caribbean Episcopate, held within the framework of the Latin American Episcopal Council (CELAM), highlighting the prophetic character of the Church in the recent history of Latin America. Through a historical-critical and theological-pastoral approach, the study examines the Conferences of Medellín (1968), Puebla (1979), Santo Domingo (1992), and Aparecida (2007), situating each within its respective sociopolitical, economic, and cultural context. It demonstrates how the Latin American Church—particularly during decades marked by military dictatorships, structural inequalities, and systematic human rights violations—assumed a prophetic stance of denouncing structures of sin, institutionalized violence, and social exclusion, while proclaiming paths of liberation, justice, and peace. The preferential option for the poor emerges as a transversal and constitutive axis of evangelizing action, grounded in the Gospel, the Church’s Social Doctrine, and the creative reception of the Second Vatican Council. The article further identifies shifts in emphasis over time, from the strong structural denunciation in Medellín and Puebla, through the institutional restraint of Santo Domingo, to the renewed critical and missionary impetus in Aparecida, reaffirming the Church’s commitment to human dignity, civic participation, the common good, and social transformation in light of Christian faith.
