This article analyzes the relationship between politics and education from the perspective of education for critical citizenship. It is based on the assumption that education is not limited to the transmission of content, but constitutes a comprehensive formative process oriented toward the development of intellectual autonomy, historical awareness, and ethical-social commitment. The reflection articulates foundations from the classical philosophical tradition—especially the Aristotelian conception of politics as care for the common life—with contributions from critical pedagogy and contemporary democratic theory. It examines the legal framework established by the Brazilian Constitution and the Law of Guidelines and Bases of National Education, both of which recognize education for citizenship as an essential purpose of teaching.
The study also incorporates the perspective of Christian social thought, with emphasis on the Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes, the encyclical Fratelli Tutti, and the guidelines of the Global Compact on Education, which highlight the centrality of human dignity, fraternity, and a culture of encounter. Finally, contemporary challenges—such as misinformation, ideological polarization, and the weakening of public dialogue—are analyzed, along with methodological proposals that foster participatory and interdisciplinary practices.
It is concluded that education for critical citizenship constitutes a privileged path for strengthening democracy and for building a culture of peace grounded in justice and shared responsibility.
